The game of mafia revolves around two factions: town or mafia. Before the game begins, you are assigned a role that will tell you whether you are aligned with the town, the mafia, or neither (neutral). The town's goal is to eliminate all of the mafia. The mafia's goal is to eliminate all the town, or to reach a point where this can no longer be stopped (usually when the number of mafia members equals town). Neutral parties have their own goals.
The mafia are given a group chat to communicate with each other, so the mafia is the informed minority, and the town is an uninformed majority.
The game operates in day-night cycles. The game starts with a day period: you talk, make unfunny memes, and vote for someone to eliminate at the end of the day. (Oftentimes, we use the word "lunch" to refer to this.) This is town's chance to kill off mafia.
After the day ends, the mafia channel is locked and the night begins. Players who have special roles or abilities can use them during the night. For example, a commonly seen role is a town doctor, who can choose one person to protect from death at night. Mafia can almost always kill a person at night, so this is their chance to eliminate the town.
Days and nights keep repeating until someone wins.
Most of our games have 24-hour days and nights, so most mafia games will last around a week total, if not more. Our days / nights are long so that people can check in on the chat regardless of what times they are available, so you can participate as long as you have time at least once a day. However, the game will often have very quick-moving and intense conversations, so oftentimes the more you are able to be online and participate in chat, the more you get out of the game.
